  16.     This is a most unusual project; we
  17. are going to mount a sensitive
  18. microphone behind a series of acoustic
  19. wave guides and hope for the best.
  20. Actually, our wave guides are aluminum
  21. tubes cut to resonate at frequencies
  22. near the human voice range.  This
  23. arrangement also serves to make the
  24. unit highly directional as sound other
  25. than that arriving at the mouth of the
  26. tubes arrives at the mic in an
  27. out-of-phase condition and cancels
  28. itself out.
  29.  
  30.      With this easily constructed
  31. device it is possible (under ideal
  32. conditions) to pick up conversations
  33. several HUNDRED feet away, in fact,
  34. reports of recording conversations up
  35. to 30 yards away THROUGH A CLOSED
  36. WINDOW have been made...
  37.  
  38.      The device is quite easy to
  39. construct:  First get together the
  40. following materials:
  41.  
  42.  [1]  56' of 3/8" outside diameter
  43.      aluminum tubing (hardware stores)
  44.  [2]  1 sensitive amplifier with
  45.      operating paraphenalia
  46.  [3]  1 sensitive microphone element -
  47.      use either a good condenser or a
  48.      crystal, as their outputs tend to
  49.      be a bit higher than their dynamic
  50.      counterparts.
  51.  [4]  1 funnel
  52.  [5]  Assorted small hardware
  53.  
  54.      Cut the tubing into 37 pieces
  55. ranging from 1" through 36" in one inch
  56. divisions.  Now bundle them together
  57. symmetrically with one end flush (as
  58. shown).  As you assemble them, blue
  59. them together in several places to
  60. assure they remain in the state you
  61. have put them in (were it only so easy
  62. with people...).

  76.      Take the funnel and fit it around
  77. the flush end of the tube bundle.
  78. Being astute enough to read this, I am
  79. sure you will notice the tubes do not
  80. exactly fit into the funnel.  At this
  81. realization, take a small hammer and
  82. beatt the funnel to nearly as possible.
  83.  Now fill the remaining spaces with a
  84. good rubber based caulking compound.

  86.      The microphone element is placed
  87. in the neck of the funnel (with a
  88. rubber grommet if it is small enough to
  89. fit up into the neck - otherwise set it
  90. into the other end of the neck before
  91. caulking the tubing in place).  Glue
  92. the mic into place and caulk any air
  93. space around it.

  95.      Run the microphone wires out the
  96. neck of the funnel, glue in place, and
  97. also caulk to give it a closed, fairly
  98. air invincible seal around the entire
  99. unti.  If you really feel up to it,
  100. fiberglass resin can be used instead of
  101. caulking compound.

  115.      Run the output wires to your
  116. amplifier and place the entire unit on
  117. some sort of support, a camera tripod
  118. being ideal.  (Need I remind you to
  119. check matching impedances?).  The unit
  120. should be aimed at the subject and then
  121. panned about for maximum volume (sound
  122. does not travel in a straight line, but
  123. may vary with wind, etc).

  125.      If wind noise overrides your
  126. target noise you can place a piece of
  127. cheesecloth across the end of the unit.
  128.  If a particularly difficult noise
  129. interferes with your pick-up you can
  130. often plug up the tube(s) carrying this
  131. noise with a cork.

  133.       Good hunting, avoid paranoid
  134. people who may feel your rifle mic more
  135. than resembles the real thing...
